Favorite Series Starters Boxed Set: A collection o&hellip by Various
5.0 out of 5 stars Can't go wrong, May 22 2011
This makes an excellent birthday gift for kids of many ages. I've even given this as a gift to kids as young as 4 - I find kids of that age generally have the memory and attention span for a simple chapter book (when read aloud by a parent willing to stop and explain along the way) - but it would make a great gift for a young reader. You can't beat the price for 5 books in a boxed set. Excellent introduction to 5 of the most beloved kids' series.

This is a fun activity book for toddlers and even preschoolers. There are lots of flaps and knobs and things to explore, and even a whiteboard. The snippets of text were funny and clever enough to amuse me, too. It's sturdy and durable, but you will want to be careful about unsupervised use in younger kids - the whiteboard marker is a dangerous weapon when wielded by an unsupervised toddler, and younger toddlers will want to chew on the various items. I have given this as part of a newborn gift or as a birthday present for a 1-year-old on many occasions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superbly well-written, Jan. 12 2011
I read this book to my daughter and I'm not sure which one of us enjoyed it more (although I suspect it might be me). This humor is subtle but laugh-out-loud funny and the main character is supremely likable - kind and smart and creative. Unlike other children's books, there are no villains - every character has redeeming qualities. I find some of the characters in other children's books to be petulant or downright mean (often including the main character) but you will find a much more nuanced (and likeable) view of humanity in this book. I would wish that the author write adult books as well, but I'm not actually sure I would enjoy it more than these.
