Sings The Cole Porter Songbook ~ Ella Fitzgerald
Sings The Cole Porter Songbook ~ Ella Fitzgerald
While ANITA O'DAY'S tribute album with BILLY MAY is an excellent alternative, those who want to buy one collection still have to go with ELLA and BUDDY BERGMAN who collaborated for the first time here. They hit a homerun right from the start.ELLA is in top shape with the ballads and also the uptempo numbers.Hear how ELLA gets through IN THE STILL OF THE NIGHT a difficult song to sing;LOVE FOR SALE a song better suited for DINAH WASHINGTON but again ELLA manages to take a hold on it with her own way;i personnaly like the gorgeous treatment giving to EASY TO LOVE,SO IN LOVE AND EVERYTIME WE SAY GOODBYE.Amazingly i should say, because the most famous PORTER songs are usually the uptempo… Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars MARILYN IS OUR CHERIE, Jan. 4 2001
We've got to admit that this kind of material belongs to the theater. However the casting of DON MURRAY in a real far out character and MARILYN MONROE as a dancer works surprizingly well. The saloon scene with MARILYN singing the 1942 MERCER classic THAT OLD BLACK MAGIC is fun.The fighting match in the snow is a real audience rouser.Perhaps one can say that the character that MURRAY plays seems rather unappealing and rather unbelievable. To resume the story simply, it's a youngman from the country who becomes a man when he discovers sex the first time he sees CHERIE.

Following in tone and mood the classic WEE WEE HOURS album,FRANK and NELSON RIDDLE do not succeed as well with this one ,also an album of ballads. The overall effect intended gets lost somewhere along the way,but of course this is still a good record. The title track is pen by his longtime friend SAMMY CAHN;yes it's true that ONE FOR MY BABY is done very tastefully and is irresistible. Is it any wonder that the best numbers are the MERCER and RODGERS songs.Time never take anything from the great ones.Good, but not in the top 10 CAPITOL album list. It's a matter of taste, but i like SONGS FOR SWINGIN' LOVERS and COME DANCE WITH ME so much.
