In My Own Words:
A transplanted Yankee living in metro Atlanta, my primary job is in Human Resources, although I occasionally teach college-level communication courses, both on-ground and online.

I greatly enjoy viewing DVDs in my home theater, and fancy myself a good judge of a quality film. I particularly enjoy good science fiction (e.g., Star Wars, Matrix, Dune), action (e.g., Indiana Jones, Blade), drama… Read more

Stuck on You (Widescreen) DVD ~ Matt Damon
Stuck on You (Widescreen) DVD ~ Matt Damon
When I turn on a Farrelly Brothers film, I expect bawdy, over-the-top comedy that will make me laugh, not because of its sophistication, but because of its sheer absurdity and outrageousness. The Farrelly's last two lackluster installments, Shallow Hal & Stuck on You, barely raised a giggle. For some reason, the Farrelly brothers have gone all sentimental and sensitive, and apart from the general absurdity of the premises of the story, Stuck on You just does not deliver the significant belly laughs of a Dumb and Dumber, for example.

The Farrelly brothers seem to have lost their comedic edge, and even appearances by Meryl Streep and Cher cannot add enough interest to the weak… Read more

Big Fish [Import] DVD ~ Ewan McGregor
Big Fish [Import] DVD ~ Ewan McGregor
Tim Burton is a master of movies that blur genre lines. Burton's Batman and Batman Returns were action-adventure-superhero movies with a twist of black humor provided by Nicholson's Joker and DeVito's Penguin, respectively. Beetlejuice and Sleepy Hollow were horror-comedies, and Mars Attacks was kitsch-scifi-comedy. I could go on, but will get to the point. Big Fish contains elements of tragedy, comedy, adventure, fantasy, and drama, and mixes them up into a delightful and sensitive tall tale unlike any of Burton's other works.

The casting is immaculate: Ewan McGregor makes a great younger version of Albert Finney, and Allison Lohman is a dead ringer for a young Jessica Lange. Other… Read more

Veronica Guerin DVD ~ Cate Blanchett
Veronica Guerin DVD ~ Cate Blanchett
I sat down to watch VG last night with no expectations and very little information about the film or the subject, only having seen a trailer or two and knowing that the classy and beautiful Cate Blanchett was the star. I knew that I was in trouble when the words, "Directed by Joel Schumacher" flashed up in the credits--as in, the man who destroyed the Batman franchise with blacklit motorcycle gangs and a [appealing] batsuit.

Neither Blanchett or Schumacher disappointed. Blanchett was brilliant, and Schumacher was terrible. The storytelling in the film followed a basic chronology, and failed to captialize on the great emotional depth of Guerin's struggle with journalistic integrity over… Read more
