A truly outstanding book, beautifully written and that leaves you unable to put the book down. Louis Zamperini's courage and determination not to give in to one of mankind's worst periods of abuse is a tribute not only to him but does justice to the many men mentioned within his account who despite being beaten, tortured and abused did not lose their desire to survive and fight back no matter how small the victory. This should be required reading for young people to appreciate how power and cultural pressures if not curtailed can lead to atrocities and abuses of power. As You Were: The Tragedy at Valcartier by Gerry Fostaty

Gerry Fostaty has written a book that is an enjoyable read due to his clear style and clear description of a major Canadian military tragedy that until recently was little known by most Canadians. He conveys the deep sense of injustice that followed the Valcartier incident by many of those directly involved and raises good questions about the handling of the incident. He not only describes in detail the incident and its lead up but also the aftermath and his deep personal involvement, as a young 18 year old Sargeant that day, comes across page after page. A highly recommended read.
