Sanctus Ignis ~ Adagio
Sanctus Ignis ~ Adagio
I was expecting a real major breakthrough after reading so many favorable reviews. However, I honestly couldn't find anything absolutely original here, except for the highly complex drum structures. To me, the album sounded almost identical to Symphony X, especially David Readman's voice. The guitar sound is almost a copy of Yngwie's, although Stephen Forté's composing abilities are much better than Malmsteen's. Overall, I rate this a 8.5/10 in the prog/power metal category. The individual performance of each player is amazing, especially Bruinenberg's, but the compositions lack soul and melody, it sounds a bit flat for my taste.

Sea Airs ~ Rick Wakeman
Sea Airs ~ Rick Wakeman

My Rick Wakeman collection exceeds 60 (sixty!) CDs. Only a handful of them are as beautiful, touching and inspiring as Sea Airs (IMO the best of the "Airs" trilogy). Each piano song on Sea Airs is exceptional and played on accoustic piano (a major plus). Title songs are spot on, giving you an idea of what is to come (ie. Sailor's Lament, The Mermaid, The Harbour, Clouds, Lost at Sea, et al). The songs are very evocative and melancholic, yet overflowing with melody and beauty.

It makes no differenece if you are into heavy, power, black, doom, speed, thrash metal, pop, hip-hop or rap, Sea Airs will keep you satisfied and in complete musical equilibrium. Do yourself a favor and get… Read more

Principles of Pain ~ Elegy
5.0 out of 5 stars Superb... as usual, May 2 2004
I rate Principles of Pain a 9/10. Elegy's previous release Forbidden Fruit is a 10 Plus, a truly amazing production, so that's maybe the reason why other fans may have felt this as a let down. This is an unfortunate thought because Principles has many incredible things to offer. Like most prog power-metal bands Elegy's musicianship is surreal, although in a league of their own and with a different brand. It shows they concentrate on quality and substance. But what makes Elegy so special is the way their message is conveyed. The lyrics are not that complicated, yet full of real life significance. The drum rhythmic patterns, creativity and overall structure is beyond belief. Guitarist Patrick… Read more
