Sams Teach Yourself Php4 in 24 Hours: Complete Sta&hellip by Matt Zandstra
3.0 out of 5 stars Covers the material, April 15 2004
This book does the job. It's written in a plain, efficient style and it served my immediate needs. It covers the subject and each chapter is presented in bite-sized chunks. As the title would suggest: 24 hours; 24 chapters.
This book could probably serve as a reference resource. I don't think any of the chapters really rely on the material from earlier chapters.
However, this book soon lost its position as a fixture on my desktop. It does not stimulate. One wonders whether the chapter layout was the result of a survey or a committee decision. Because the author is bound by that layout (and the "24 hours" promise) he doesn't really take any risks.

Scenario: I'm an experienced programmer and I'd tinkered with PHP a little bit but needed to get going on a serious project. Fast.
This book was the answer. It covers all the essential ground in a well structured way. Don't be fooled by the word "Mastering..." in the title. The author is not too frightened to give you another grounding in the basic principles behind web architectures - but he does it in such fluid fashion you won't get frustrated.
This book will teach you great conventions and techniques to ensure you program effectively and give you a firm foundation on which to build robust, extensible projects. The chapters: "Forms and User Interaction" and… Read more
