Looking over the reviews of this movie, the reader may noite that there are essentially three views expressed, and those views have everything to do with the attitude the viewer brought to the movie. Those expecting a story in the Hollywood tradition of "King of Kings" are not just disappointed, but revolted. Those with a good knowledge of Biblical history are generally outraged at what they see are serious omissions and inaccuracies. And those who come looking for an expression of their religious faith love it. Not just the fundamentalist Catholics of Gibson's persuasion, but Protestants as well.

Franks's basic thesis is that middle-America is stupid. No, really. They keep electing Republicans, who have no interest in them, but exist only to serve the interests of their wealthy opressors. Sounds like 19th Century populism, doesn't it? And about as sophisticated.

Frank, like many of the New Left, has a world view that blinds him to large parts of the deabte. For one thing, he is oblivious to how much the social and moral issues that are characteristic of the Republican Party resonate with not only middle America, but with large segments of the Hispanic and African American communities. Phenomeonon was advertised as a sci-fi movie, and whilke it has a sci-fi sort of theme at its core, anyone going to see the movie based on that was sorely disappointed.

What this movie is, actually, is a story about a man learning to cope with something that he can't understand, and how it brings him closer to his friends and his community, and how it allows him to understand and deal with his own fate.

Yes, it's a bit sappy at times, but it also contains some really excellent performances. Travolta delivers what it certainly his most authentic and touching portrayal of a real human being yet seen in his post-Tarantino career. Forrest Whittaker and Robert Duvall likewise contribute… Read more
