Such moments are rare indeed these days when one takes a book in the hand and is completely captivated by it after reading the first few pages. That happened to me recently when I started reading " Love In The Balance " by Marianne K. Martin. It is this tenderness of feeling, this feeling of "love" of which the novel is so full of, which moves me. For the violence that plays the secondary role in the novel, it is this abundant feeling of tenderness in the novel that the reader feels for the people, for Kasey, Connie, Sharon, Sage, Tom and Michael, Kasey's cousin Troy, and Donna and Evonne that has remained with me. "The Shadow Lines" by Amitav Ghosh was written when the homes of the Sikhs were still smoldering, some of the most important questions the novel probes are the various faces of violence and the extent to which its fiery arms reach under the guise of fighting for freedom. Ghosh's treatment of violence in Calcutta and in Dhaka is valid even today, more than ten years after its publication. Though Maas's approach at transporting you to the location of a mystifying cove where some really weird, off the wall characters reside and uncommon occurrences materialize, is to some degree skillful accomplished, but you are unfortunately left feeling to some extent confused and a little disorientated with the many happenings and fusion of the various characters.
