Great subject, but which falls short in the hands of this writer, and possibly due to a clumsy translation. The book has its few brilliant moments, it starts off very well with the professor in his villa overlooking the Mediterranean, confronting an intruder, but then it becomes a rather painful read. It drags on and on in some areas, and is just hard to understand at times. It lacks in subtlety (why not just let the Colonel's name be Constantine (not many people know the name Dragases in history and hence would need explanation) and the sailor's name Notaras without further explanation?), and riddled throughout is the inquiry 'Could this be an explanation?'. Excellent story. Perhaps my favorite post-apocalyptic novel. Very sad at times, uplifting other times. Interesting political, social, and religious commentary within some episodes and chapters. I strongly recommend this book to anybody. I can't believe I hadn't heard of this novel before.

At times tedious reading. At times repetitive. Strong bias focusing on violence against women, sometimes even equating persistence on the part of a man interested in a woman with aggressiveness and threat of violence. Anti-gun bias expressed several times throughout the book.

Focus on rare stalker cases, especially those endured by public figures and celebrities, yet no mention of the racial angle of crime in American, the high number of black-on-black gang violence and the equally alarming rate of violence of blacks perpetrated on whites.
