Wonderful, compelling, beautiful, mesmerizing - all of these could describe Kurkov's "Penguin Lost." A sequel to "Death and the Penguin," the story follows Victor Zolotaryov as he searches for Misha the penguin through the urban desert of Moscow and the war stricken Chechnya. Although the translation is at times shaky and more than once punctuated with bad grammar, it is still worth a read and I whole heartedly recommend not just "Penguin Lost," but all of Kurkov's works.
