You don't have to be a gamer to appreciate SimCity 4. If you have the hand-eye coordination to browse a website, you're covered there. You don't need a great sense of spatial relations with the various levels of zoom. You don't need to be able to make split-second decisions with the possible exception of quickly hitting the pause button. You don't need many of the traditional computer gamer skills to enjoy SimCity 4. What you do need is the ability to make risk-benefit decisions, and a sense of how the real world works. I've bought a number of different gardening reference books over the years, but none has been as helpful as this book. Only 96 perenials are covered (not counting the variations of each plant.) Every one of them can be grown in the Pacific Northwest. Last week I decided that would finally get around to planting in the rocks around my little backyard pond. It didn't take long for me to identify a number of plants suitable for the rocks that could be planted in fall. Sure enough, I was able to find them all at the local garden center! I've become a big fan of Trading Spaces. It's not because I'm interested in decorating or room design. Trading Spaces is about people. It's an honest "reality" show about homeowners reacting to the designers. So it is natural that the first Trading Spaces book wouldn't be about the designs. It's about the designers. (And the host and the carpenters.) When watching the show, I've often wondered who the designers are, and what happened to them along the way.
