In Year 4 everybody’s favourite rumpled detective matches wits with a good assortment of clever murderers: Robert Conrad, Dick Van Dyke, Patrick McGoohan, Robert Vaughn, Oskar Werner and George Hamilton. Their schemes are more intricate than on average, and it’s the usual combination of tiny oversights and excessive verbosity that trip them up. In the Dick Van Dyke and George Hamilton episodes it’s the latter that’s particularly well crafted, Columbo finally tricking them into incriminating themselves.
