We just picked up a couple of these for our kids (and us too). It's too bad there is such a difference in price between amazon.ca and .com as these boards are a lot of fun, and we like fun in Canada too. At the current time, these are selling for $40 - $60 in US, and are well over $100 here in Canada with shipping.
At first, it was a challenge to stay on the board at all. After about half an hour though, most of us could propel and stay on them reasonably well. They work best on cement, or a smooth paved surface. This movie is a real hit in my house. As far as I'm concerned, this is the culmination of many years of animation knowledge. There's action, humor, romance (in small doses) and no bad guys?? As always with Studio Ghibli, by the end of the film it's hard to put your finger on the antagonist. You find them being revealed as multi faceted, not quite what you would expect once you're given more than a glance at them. There are no "Cruella Deville's" in this film (thank God!). Billy Crystal makes a great fire demon (if you can call him a demon, as charming as he is). Sophie is the kind of girl next door we'd all like to get to know. I give this three stars. Personally, I speak english and don't care much about subtitles and letterbox yadda yadda. This review is in referrence to the movie itself. I liked the overall presentation and the characters, I could see my kids really appreciating this one (they did). As for me, I found this movie entertaining, but a little dry. If I could give a recommendation, I'd say get it for the kids. My tastes run more towards the Princess Mononokes and Nausicaas. It was kind of sweet to watch the little girls in this video - come on, when aren't little girls and big dumb rabbit penguin looking things not sweet?
