The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate is infused with a warm, inviting, old-fashioned sort of charm, bringing to mind classics like My Family and Other Animals, Cheaper by the Dozen, and Little House on the Prairie. Calpurnia is a sympathetic narrator  a spunky, smart girl whos not as interested in becoming a lady as her parents would like. Shes a little precocious (though not obnoxiously so) in some ways, but in many others shes still very much a child. Its clear from the start that Calpurnia is up against some pretty conservative attitudes, living in a small town in Texas in 1899; shes expected to learn Deportment and piano, though shed much rather be off collecting beetles instead.
