DIY Couture: Create Your Own Fashion Collection by Rosie Martin
I borrowed this book from the library when it caught my eye and have gotten a chance to go over the book, reading several sections and skimming some others. I haven't made any of the projects yet but I am an experienced seamstress with 10 years or more of sewing and pattern drafting experience and can sew projects such as blazers with relative ease. I am also young, only 22 so I am definitely within the demographic of the book.

I really like the book, I have sewn DIY style projects before, retrofitting men's dress shirts into things like skirts. I think this is a great starting point for beginners and for those with more experience, it has some creative ideas and inspiration for… Read more

This is a fantastic resource for those who sew with commercial patterns from the Big 4 (Vogue, McCalls, Butterick, Simplicity). It's very thorough and if you've used commercial patterns before, this is helpful to supplement whatever knowledge you might have learned from a more beginner's oriented book. If you're very good at figuring things out from technical drawings like I am, then the lack of images of real sewing examples should not hinder you. For those that are more spatially deficient, they might need another book or two to supplement this. I'm taking a beginner's class on Fashion Illustration right now. I have some very minimal drawing experience from when I was in elementary school and high school but by no means am I an artist. This book is a fantastic resource for an overview of the fundamentals and basics of fashion illustration and croquis drawing. Beautiful diagrams and artwork of varying styles, the author pushes you at the end of the book to develop your own style because once you know the rules and basics, you can "break them" to your liking.
