In My Own Words:
I'm passionate about the glory of the human voice, and while I think opera is the best vehicle for this, I also love the great choral works and classical song of other kinds. My other main musical interests are nonvocal forms of classical music, show music and film music, folk, and some 'new age'- especially that of a folk character (Enya, Loreena McKennitt), and the great vocalists like Frank Sin… Read more
I'm passionate about the glory of the human voice, and while I think opera is the best vehicle for this, I also love the great choral works and classical song of other kinds. My other main musical interests are nonvocal forms of classical music, show music and film music, folk, and some 'new age'- especially that of a folk character (Enya, Loreena McKennitt), and the great vocalists like Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald. I like jazz but don't know much about it. While I am not a great rock fan, and I hate heavy metal and rap, I have some nostalgic feelings about some 1980s rock because that's what I listened to in college.
Basically, I feel that great music or a great voice is great no matter the genre. My favorite opera singer of all time is the great Swedish tenor Jussi Bjorling, but there are many, many others that I love - far too many to list here. I also believe that every era has it's great voices - yes, even our own. There are few, if any opera singers that I entirely dislike - even the few that I normally can't stand recorded one or two things that are worth hearing. Note that I said OPERA singers - not 'crossover' nothings like Andrea Bocelli and Fillipa Giordano.
I sing myself as a chorus mezzo soprano/alto, in both operatic and standard choral works, as well as Jewish choral music. I currently sing with the Saint George's Choral Society in New York City - this year we are performing Handel's 'Israel in Egypt' and Honneger's 'Le Roi David' .
I am going to try to post reviews at least twice a month, if not weekly. I also intend to review as many Bjorling recordings as possible, all the recordings of my current favorite stars, Roberto Alagna, Angela Gheorghiu, Cecilia Bartoli, Olga Borodina, Ben Heppner, Bryn Terfel, Ramon Vargas, etc, and to review singers, and perhaps operas, who might not be so well known to those who aren't major collectors.
My other big passion is science fiction and fantasy - one of these days I'll start writing it. I have been a Star Trek fan since I was 10, and have been and still am a fan of many other SF TV series and movies (i.e Babylon 5, Doctor Who, Andromeda)
The other kinds of books I like to read on a regular basis are mysteries (particularly historical and/or exotic settings), Medieval and Renaissance fiction and nonfiction, classic literature and poetry, and children's books, which usually have much more care and imagination than books for adults.
I am also a religious, progressive, postdenominational Jew, so I also intend to review books and music of Jewish interest. I will probably review several Hanukkah related children's books before the holiday. Although I am Ashkenazi, I have become fascinated with Sephardic culture, mostly food and music.
Although I have been a vegetarian for most of my adult life, I am modifying this somewhat now because I just went on the Atkins Diet. (I need to lose about 100 pounds) Hopefully I will inch back into vegetarianism after the induction period.
In real life I am 34 years old and will start a job shortly as a development assistant at a non-profit organization that provides programs for the developmentally disabled. Let's hope I can do some good for a change.
My ultimate desire would be to get paid for writing reviews like this, at least on occasion. For now, I am working to become a Top 1000 reviewer! (or maybe even higher...)
