I have been a child therapist for 3 decades and this book was quite inspiring. I found my use of the creative arts in my sessions greatly increased as did my effectiveness after reading Cathy Malchiodi book. What a pleasure :-)
I am a child therapist interested in attachment theory and its application to parenting. Hughes has shown in this book the expertise he has developed after many years of clinical practice. He presents the theory in a grounded and easy to understand manner. And with numerous examples of dialogues between the parent and child he has given the reader quite a comprehensive view of attachment focused parenting. Its a nice demonstration of why a behaviourist approach should only be a small part of what is best for raising children.
Clear, simply worded and described concepts and examples of putting Somatic Experiencing into practice with traumatized children. Lots of practical techniques/ways of assisting children to express and "complete" fixed action patterns. I will share it with my colleagues and use many of the suggested strategies.
