Thinking the Twentieth Century by Tony Judt
A great book by a great thinker sadly taken away from us too early. His scope of historical knowledge is most rewarding.
The War That Ended Peace: The Road to 1914 by Margaret MacMillan
A magnificent book that looks into the men and the policies that lead to WW1. A great follow up to her earlier work Paris 1919
The Sleepwalkers: How Europe Went To War In 1914 by Christopher Clark

This a magnificent scholarly work that I am in the middle of reading.. I have not read a more detailed explanation of the men involved in the causation of WW1 and subsequently WW2. It is quite alarming in the intrigues and posturing that lead to such an appalling conflict. Serbia does not come out well.
