I suspect that it's a bit odd for a 39-year-old to be reviewing a children's book--even if it is an award-winner. No, the story may not have the philosophical depth of Robinson Crusoe, but neither is it hampered by the eighteenth-century style of Defoe's work. Simply put, Island of the Blue Dolphins is an immensely entertaining and excellent work. The author paints a vivid picture of Karana's adventures on the island after she is accidentally left abandoned. In an ironic twist, we learn at the end that, despite the hardships that Karana herself suffered, her entire people was wiped out by a shipwreck only a few days after she was abandoned.
