Many reviewers have been offended by this book, possibly because it disturbs them that a person raised Catholic would want to convert out. But that's really not the point of this story. Really, the author paints a very touching picture of his parents' passion for Catholicism. Clearly, these were not people flailing around for a convenient way out of Judaism, which is the way we Jews like to portray converts to Christianity. Dubner's parents were truly drawn to the beauty, philosophy, and faith of Christianity -- specifically Catholicism -- and I am impressed with his ability to portray that truth of his parents' lives. The greater metropolitan Los Angeles area is absolutely immense, and parents are faced by a daunting and dizzying array of choices when it comes to public and private grade-school and high-school education. Believe it or not, the Los Angeles Unified School District is the second largest in the nation, but when it comes to PRIVATE schools, Los Angeles has more than any other city in America! If you are the kind of parent who believes your children can be wonderful hood ornaments on the vehicle of your personal success, this is the book for you. The author abhors public schools because, as he says, they have to accept EVERYBODY (ugh!). He favors and supports boarding school education for children as young as first grade (only about five years old) so that they can live in a warm, morally consistent (but unloving) environment all year long, and because he feels that the child and his parents will then share only happy memories of carefree summers and holidays, with none of that messy and mutually irritating go-clean-up-your-room-and-do-your-homework fuss and muss.
