My French Life

The photos are wonderful, and the subject is one that arouses magic in the minds of all romantics. However, the prose is a bummer. I'm glad the author has enough money to restore a wonderful home in France and to transplant her family just to be near it. We, too, could put the Ritz Hotel and the Plaza Athenee on our private lists of special places - get real. There is more passion and energy to be found some of the blogs of woman who have risked everything to move to France without lots of $$$ to
catch them if they fail, or even Suzy Gershman's book. I am disappointed.

Like oatmeal, I suppose, this book is good for us - serious theme, trying to see both sides of the picture in a senseless act of violence, how society facilitates the downward spiral of poor youth, etc., but I wish George hadn't spent valuable time away from the characters and plots we love. More mysteries!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sad truth about Italy, Jan 29 2008
Those of us who love Italy as a destination of beauty and art tend not to want to think about how things work day to day. This sad and shocking book is a brave account of behind-the-scenes corruption that originates in the south but affects all parts of the country. The translation can be a little stilted, but should not be enough to put anyone off reading Saviano's excellent book.
