Scorched Earth the Russian German War 19 by Paul Carell
5.0 out of 5 stars Struggles, Jun 9 2004
This book is essential to study the Russo-German conflict. Yes Paul Carrell is biased to the German side, understandable as a veteran of WW2, but he has put together a solid and most readable effort. He adds a personal face to the battle, a story not only told on the grand scale of battle, but also of the smaller things, like a soldier's long journey back to his own lines. The story is told slightly out of sequence, mainly to show what was the turning point of these two years(Kursk) and then tells the story from beginning to end. It is well worth the investment of time. The book has pictures of varying quality but the maps are excellent.

Explaining Hitler by Ron Rosenbaum
4.0 out of 5 stars Curious Asides, Mar 2 2004
This is not really a biography of Hiler, it is more of a search on the margins of the impact the world may have had on Hitler and the influence he had on the world in a very personal sense. It could be best compared to the books of Gitta Sereny, as both authors examine those scarred and impacted by Hitler. Rosenbaum seeks out the places of mystery and people on who Hilter made a lasting impression. It is a journey to try to unwrap a riddle that may truly never be solved. Hitler is not a cut and dried, black and white issue, he is shades of grey, and Ron Rosenbaum effectively presents a lot of these shades. To understand this man of evil, this is a most important book, best complimented with… Read more
Fighting for Freedom: The Ukrainian Volunteer Divi&hellip by Richard Landwehr
3.0 out of 5 stars Off Center, Feb 28 2004
When this book was written, there were very few, if any, books in English on this subject, as compared to works from the Canadian Ukranian community, so this book was important at the time since it explored the at the time obscure existance the Galicia Divison. Since then three better books have been written, and with less biased, more objectionable views. The author, who's study of the more arcane units of the Waffen SS is to be admired, often falls in line with the view Waffen SS veterans have of their service, the veterans of the Galicia Divison feel the same, they were indeed fighters for freedom for the Ukraine, but also fell into many traps, like anti-semitism. The author portrays… Read more
