Persuasion is not one of my favourite Jane Austen stories so I had held off buying this dvd. Seeing trailers of it I thought it might be ok. Well it wasn't. One of my biggest disappointments was Sally Hawkins playing Anne Elliot. I hadn't seen this actress before but didn't let that deter me. I found her acting dreadful. Like others have said, the whimpering, simpering type of character she played was downright annoying. And, where on earth was the costume director for this production. Why does Anne continually wear dark, depressing, horrible clothes. The other ladies are dressed in nicer costumes but Sally Hawkins always looks dowdy and frumpy. I thought as the movie went along… Read more

This book is ok but unfortunately it was not written by Bill Bryson but by many people in the UK who entered their letters to be included in this book. Bill Bryson oversaw it all but it is NOT his writing. I was disappointed, but this was my own fault for not reading that in the description. It was ok but I wouldn't recommend it. Lesson learned? Buy Bill Bryson only and be sure to read all the info before clicking purchase!

I really enjoyed this story perhaps because I am older and can relate to reflecting on the past. That is what this story is about. In the 1950's England a young woman with a baby is married but meets an Italian incredibly good looking man. They have an torrid affair. She remembers this affair the rest of her life and uses what was purely sex and flashy honeymoon type romance, as a yardstick to measure her husband who seems incredibly dull and boring. I don't want to give a "spoiler" but eventually near the end of her life, she manages to view her past the way it really was. I would recommend this dvd, it is good entertainment. Good acting and good story.
