Drawing Out the Dragons: A Meditation on Art, Dest&hellip by James A. Owen
This may be a small book but it contains some very potent and thought-provoking ideas. The book is set up with some pages containing a wise life quote from someone and some are paragraphs and some are short reminisces of life changing situations experienced by the author. It's based on the talk that Mr Owen gives when he is asked to speak to school groups. It is not about his books but rather about how his attitude has made a great difference in his success as a person and an author even as a child. His main thought really struck a cord with me : If you really want to do something, no one can stop you, but if you really don't want to do something, no one can help you. An interesting book about a female North American former marine who takes a translation job with a mining company in the Congo. Although she spent her youth in Africa the many horrible genocidal African wars had not yet started when her family left there to a positing State-side. When they arrive she is disconcerted to discover that a former Marine friend is also at the village by her base-camp as a doctor at the missionary camp. She is disconcerted because she has feelings for him and yet she believes that he left her brother to die in Afghanistan. The theme of the book is based of the verse in Isaiah 5:20, Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil. Robin must determine who… Read more
Tangled Secrets by Carol Preston
Tangled Secrets by Carol Preston
An excellent story with understanding of the trauma many people suffer in childhood when they have been abandoned by their parents. The story describes how abandonment can affect two different men and what it is like for the woman in their lives as she deals with the emotional damage as they try to become men with families and responsibilities. Set in the 1800's in Australia, the pathos and how to overcome the damage with the help of faith and extended family moves this story along at a satisfying pace.
