Like many others who have written reviews here, I first read Mrs. Mike in my pre-teen years. I loved it, and finally got around to buying a copy of the new edition so I could read it again.
It's still a very romantic story, with engaging lead characters. The relationship that Kathy and Mike have is a delight, and the story is filled with romance, adventure, humour, and pathos.
But this time around I noticed a major problem that I'm sure didn't even occur to me 35 years ago. The portrayal of Native and Metis people in the book is shockingly paternalistic and sometimes downright bigoted. Most of the men are drunken louts who beat their wives.
