this film is a plotless melodrama about selfish, self-absorbed people. it was dull, pretentious and boring. the only straight male characters were weak and codependent(mr. virginia woolf) or clueless(mr. julianne moore). reverse the genders of the male stereotypes and there would have been an outcry of political incorrectness. don't waste your time. one would think that with this many stupendous actors that something better could have been made of it all but alas...it was terrible!
i've loved this disc ever since i first heard it. it was stolen from me when my car was broken into in new orleans and i've been trying to find another ever since. eureka! the playing, the pieces and the sound are sublime. get it, you won't regret it. perhaps the penultimate of the recordings of the 2 french well-known sonatas coupled with 2 lesser-known by equally brilliant sonatas by janacek and nielsen.
this disc is by far the best thing beck has ever done. for those of you who think this album might be a joke, the joke's on you. his collage-like pastische albums of the past were the joke and full of humor. this is an album of serious contemplation and emotional exploration by a former teenage wunderkind who has started to mature albeit painfully. it probably won't do to put this disc on at a rave as there's nothing superficial, danceable or repetitive about it. in fact, it's a recording that should be listened to by people while NOT intoxicated so that you can grow up...if possible.
