The Book of the New Sun by Gene Wolfe, is -- simply put -- the best written novel of the science fiction genre ever written. Subtle plot, text, fascinating characters, intriguing science concepts, and above all articulate writting: this has them all.

There is decently good history here and a decent attempt, on balance, to portray the rise of the Nazis without the dehumanizing and demonization that has been typical of the the film industry over the years. The evil of the Nazis is revealed realistically and rather matter of factly -- which is a good thing.

The principal weakness of 'Hitler: The Rise of Evil' is, frankly, Robert Carlyle as Hitler; the actor certainly, the direction maybe. Carlyle simply doesn't project the gravitas the actual person must have had. The Carlyle's ranting and strutting gets too crazy too soon to show the man as he must have been to appeal to so many. Hedges's premises are very flawed.

First he believes is that the human society is not perfectable, (perhaps true), then he argues that it is harmful to try, (very dubious). In that regard he blames the 18th century Enlightenment for "utopian" attempts at perfecting human being and society for most of the bloodshed and suffering since then. (Right: so I suppose abolishing slavery was "utopian".)

Secondly, he condemns adamant atheists such as Dawkins and Hitchens as "utopian fundamentalists", working on the established theme that attempts to improve the human condition are futile and harmful. Funny: it struck me reading Dawkins and Hitchens that they were rather more… Read more
