I was very disappointed in this book. The author's opinions are cranky and often odd: claims that diabetes is not hereditary, and is reversible, for instance. The author's claims of many successful cures are anecdotal and vague in detail: lots of talk about 'toxins' and the evil environment and 'bad' fast foods (is there anyone alive who doesn't realize that they aren't good for you?) He asserts that miraculous dietary adjustments 'cure' a vast number of varied conditions, but I was hard put to find out what was so very new about the advice: it leans heavily on the now commonplace low-glycaemic-index of foods, with the addition of a good deal of enthusiastic medical bafflegab. I am very pleased with this pedometer. It was easy to program, even for someone as out-of-touch with the modern world as I am. It displays the date, paces, calories,and distance in miles at the touch of a button; it is accurate, as far as I can tell; and it preserves the figures for a week, so you can record and adjust your activity levels. I don't know why measuring the distance one walks should make walking more fun, but it does. For one thing, it enables me to plan expeditions by both time and distance. This is a history of the papacy, from what is known of its obscure origins right up to the present day (last references are to 2010). It is a very good read: massive amounts of information delivered with Norwich's characteristic lightness of touch, wit, humour (even the footnotes are funny) and brilliant thumbnail sketches of his protagonists: the successive heirs to the throne of Peter.
