O Come Ye Back to Ireland by Niall Williams
O Come Ye Back to Ireland by Niall Williams
I am planning a trip to Ireland and always enjoy reading some books set in the place I am visiting. This story of a couple who moves to Ireland definitely gave a feel for the place. Both the material poverty but social richness.
Bodhran Makers: A Novel Of Ireland by John Keane
I am planning a trip to Ireland and always enjoy reading some books set in the place I am visiting. This novel is a nice look at the older Ireland. It deals with the Church and the conflict with the Church of some local villagers who want to do their traditional "wren dance" celebration. It was a good read and I think I got a feel for the place I am going to be visiting.
Isaac Newton by James Gleick
Isaac Newton by James Gleick
I loved Gleick's biography of Richard Feynman, "Genius". So my expectations for this book on possibly the most important mathematical and scientific figure were very high. I was somewhat disappointed. This biography is a little short and seemed to need a little more meat. I did not feel that truly made the reader understand the importance of Newton's accomplishments. I thought there was a little too much on Newton's forays into other fields like philosophy, etc. Also a little too much on the political fights with other scientists and mathematicians.
