This book is about a boy names Stanley Yelnats, who is wrongfully accused of stealing a baseball star's sneakers from a homeless shelter. As a result, he is sentenced to 18 horrible months of digging seemingly pointless holes at Camp Greenlake.
While Stanley is at 'camp', he meets someone who ends up as being more than a sellmate to him in this prison(which is a big deal considering he didn't have very many friends at home). His name is Zero. People tend to pick on Zero because he doesn't talk as much as others do, but he's actually very smart, and Stanley won't let anyone say anything negative about his new friend.
