This book is set in Alberta between Okotoks and Calgary mostly. I've travelled that road once or twice. It is lovely country and North does a great job of describing it.Phoebe Fairfax is a videographer who likes to do nature shows but works 2 or 3 days a week for a Calgary TV station on a lifestyle program. Phoebe, the show's on air personality, Candi Sinclair, and the program's very pregnant producer, Ella, are in Okotoks to film the First Annual Okotoks Psychic Fair. Maud Gellman, wife of the owner of their station, is the organizer and she is a non-stop talker so she should be a natural for an interview. Clara Purdy was living a quiet life in Saskatoon, working in an insurance office and living by herself in the home she grew up in. Then she ran her car into a Dodge Dart owned by a family that was moving to Fort MacMurray. They had been living in the car for a while as they had very little money. The family consisted of father (Clayton), mother (Lorraine), Clayton's mother Mrs.Pell, children Darlene, Trevor and Pearce. No one was badly hurt in the accident but while at the hospital it was noticed that Lorraine had some peculiar bruises, not caused by the crash. Maybe this book will grow on me. It may just be quirky enough to win Canada Reads but I can't say I'll put it as one of my favourites. The following comments contain spoilers so read no further if you haven't read the book.

The title refers to a small town (village or hamlet may be more appropriate) on an island in the Aleutian peninsula. It was the site of one of the Distance Early Warning (DEW) line outposts established during the Cold War. It's the place where Noah's father, Jonas Doucet, ended his travels. Jonas is also the father of the part-time narrator of the story. And Jonas is probably Joyce Doucet's uncle or cousin. Noah, Joyce and the narrator come together in… Read more
