Remains ~ Barry and the Remains
Remains ~ Barry and the Remains
Barry and the Remains had a superb reputation as being a killer live act, with tons of soul, hard rockin' power, and listenability. When they stepped into the recording studio, that all washed away by corporate bigwigs who wanted them to be the next Beatles or something similar. The one awesome tune here, "Don't Look Back", is stuffed at the bottom of a pretty thin track listing. For a much better vision of this infamous garage band, purchase A SESSION WITH THE REMAINS, a live demo recorded to entice a record company to sign a contract with them. It's much grittier, more exciting, and shows the real talent this band really had.

The follow-up to the NUGGETS boxed set sort of had it in for itself from the get-go. How can you bottle lightning twice? You simply can't, but Rhino tried really hard with this set. The thick book packed with essays, band histories, and track-by-track histories makes up for the less-than-interesting songs it describes, but there are just too many duds to count in this set.
Disc 1 is the best of the box, with classics like The Creation's "Making Time" (UK), The Smoke's "My Friend Jack" (UK), Q65's "The Life I Live" (Sweden), The Haunted's "1-2-5" (Canada), The Thoughts' "All Night Stand" (UK), and even better tunes you've probably never… Read more

Collecting the complete Lenny Kaye NUGGETS double-LP set that has gone down in the history books and adding 3 more CD's chockful of garage/punk/psychedelic classics you've never heard of, the NUGGETS boxed set is better than essential. It's QUINTESSENTIAL, the end-all meet-all of all 60s garage compilations.
Hardcore collectors will champion the PEBBLES and BACK TO THE GRAVE series as a better representation of the genre by unearthing rarer than rare singles, but the NUGGETS set is far more accessible and covers everything from Beatles-wannabes to guitar-slammin' pre-punk to trippy folk-rock to rhythmic vocal showcases. I won't bother pointing out all the highlights, as each disc is a… Read more
