Only read the Ra Expeditions if you are studying reed boats or plan on building a reed boat.
I picked this up after reading Kon-Tiki (which is outstanding) and was hoping for more of the same. While Kon-Tiki is entertaining and succinct, The Ra Expeditions seems to drag on; Heyerdahl doesn't even get the boat in the water until the halfway point.
There is a lot of anthropological discussion of different peoples and their boating history, from central Africa to Mexico. Compared to Kon-Tiki Heyerdahl is far more descriptive of the ancient civilizations and their reed techniques and the theories of their migrations.
