To compete in the highly competitive market of Crime drama - a market having in its ranks such 'heavyweights' as Poirot, Morse, Lewis, Frost and Tom Barnaby - is, in itself, an achievement.

Wycliffe is not, quite, in the same class but; the show deserves to be spoken of in the same breath. Both Series 1 and Series 2 are very good. The acting, throughout, is excellent and Shepherd excels in the role of 'Wycliffe'. As a bonus, the rugged moorland scenery (which provides a fairly constant backdrop) is breathtaking in many instances.

This fact based autobiographical series was among the best ever produced on British TV. Based on a series of books by 'James Herriot', a pseudonym, they cover the adventures and misadventures of a rural veterinary surgeon in the mid 20th Century.

This is still a superbly produced and directed classic series and it is hard to imagine any sensible person not being pleased to view it.
