I do tend to write shorter reviews that encapsulate the product without giving anything (like the surprise or plotline away). Also, to not look like a ranting & raving fool... When it comes to reviewing "the arts", I tend to lean toward the kinder side of reviewing. Music, writing and art are a self expression and should not, in my opinion be defined or criticized harshly. I tend to read, look or listen to ANYTHING I can get my hands on then gently compare it with or against other media in the same genre...

Is this film true? Is it sad? Is it sick & twisted, even? Yes on all accounts! But above all the film contains some great "bone deep" performances by Oscar winner, Charlize Theron as serial killer Aileen Wuornos, Christina Ricci as her lover, Selby Wall, and I will admit that it was nice to see Bruce Dern back on the screen as Thomas, Aileen's benefactor of sorts. Charlize Theron's performance cuts right down to the bone from her portrayal of Aileen's last ditch effort and lifelong quest for love, fortune, and fame. The film addresses Aileen's childhood trials, her longings, her unrealistic goals, her disappointments, her crimes, and ultimately, her execution… Read more

Contemporary playwright, Beth Henley's ("Crimes Of The Heart") "The Miss Firecracker Contest" is brought to life and to the big screen. The film features an incredible Holly Hunter as the tramp of the town turned wanna-be good girl beauty queen Carnelle Scott. Carnelle was an abandoned little girl who was dropped off at her aunt's house in Yazoo City not more than a year old with ringworm, diaper rash and a bag of dirty rags. Deeply intense, Tim Robbins as cousin Delmount Williams (recently out of a mental ward) and the beautiful Mary Steenburgen as Elain Rutledge (a forever young beauty queen) grew up with young Carnelle in their household and under their mother's… Read more

"Break Out The 5 Day Deodorant Pads-We're Here For The Duration!" So says Capt. Harold Barnes (Peter Coyote) when things really start to take a turn for the worse and their underwater habitat is abandoned by base due to a typhoon on the surface in Barry Levinson's "Sphere". Four civilian doctors are recruited to assemble a so-called "dream team" to investigate a 300 year old alien spacecraft at the bottom of the ocean that encases a HUGE golden sphere inside. The team consists of: Dr. Norman (Hoffman) - psychologist, Dr.Beth (Stone) - biochemist, Dr. Harry (Jackson) - mathmetician, and Dr Ted (Schreiber) - astrophysicist. Great cast and ensemble… Read more
