Despite the impressive lineup of musicians, this album does not fully capture the spirit of the music. Though it's impressive to see Jack White paying some tribute to the music of the mountains, he's detached from this music and it shows. I was disapointed to see other dedicated and accomplished traditional musicians, such as Alison Krauss, Tim O'Brien, and Dirk Powell, left on the sidelines. It seems Burnett is mistakenly aiming for a very different audience--namely, White Stripes' followers. For anyone interested in the way Cold Mountain sounds, I would recommend Dirk Powell and Tim O'Brien's "Songs Inspired by Cold Mountain." These musicians know and love this music, and it shows.
