This package is for collectors only, it's not recommended for anyone just sticking their toe into 1960s Doctor Who. For longtime fans who have lived with these stories featured here, the surviving episodes are important pieces of the puzzle to place alongside scripts, off-air audio recordings, Target novelisations and still photographs.
This is what the future sounded like in 1979.Bill Nelson's vision of a space age sci-fi future is extradordinary. Adapting themes he first worked up with Be-Bop Deluxe, Nelson takes them to their inevitable conclusion with an intoxicating mixture of Orwell's 1984, robotics, cybernetics, and hendonism that assaults the listener. Where he may dither the odd-time lyrically, the music is at times sublime and reminiscent of some of the best moments of Be Bop Deluxe. A great work.
Probably the worst thing about this book is its title, it must have been chosen to position Mark E. Smith with the buying public as a version of a rebel,an outcast or a heretic. He may indeed be a renegade, and all the other things he is often labelled by adoring fans or outraged commentators, but it is his ambiguity and unpredictability as an artist that has been at the heart of his longevity.
