Before owning this Kindle, my first ebook reader was the Kindle Keyboard. I really liked the Keyboard, and upgrading to a new Kindle was a very difficult decision. The first thing I noticed after unboxing the new Kindle is its light weight and spectacular display. Reading the product specifications, I wasn't sure I would be able to tell the difference from my Kindle Keyboard, which also uses the eInk Pearl display technology. However, I find the new display whiter and the new hand-tuned fonts easier to read than on the Kindle Keyboard. Battle Royale to me is a prime example of the worthlessness of censorship. When it was first released, Battle Royale was roundly condemned by critics as sensational, exploitative, and all-around violent (which it is). What none of the critics and censors understand, however, is that this is a fantastic book! So, why should you read it? 1) A terrific story. This is one book I kept telling myself "just one more chapter" before going to bed, and ended up staying up to 3 or 4 am. It's highly readable. 2) Relateable characters. I received this book as a Christmas present, and was looking forward to reading it after noticing the Governor General Literary Awards sticker prominently displayed on the cover. What a disappointment. The first short story, featuring two horse riders, is a classic and is nearly of the level of a Louis L'Amour short story (I have read several book collections of his short stories). Spare, yet descriptive language, telling a story with what is not said as much as what is. Very well done. The rest of the book, however, gets progressively worse.
