This is a review from a long time MMO gamer regarding the state of the game as of April 2004:

Pros:

The Star Wars galaxy is an excellent atmosphere to play in any MMO, especially if you're a fan of the series or inclined towards science fiction.

Graphics are top notch, interface is great, and the sheer amount of races, customizations to your character, and professions are staggering. Newbies will be giddy with the choices. You have the ability to fight, craft, and hunt, and unlike all other MMOs, even a newbie can contribute to a high end group depending on their specializations. Decent, but not as elegant as BF1942, Mar 28 2004

I'm a fairly expert BF1942 player and was highly anticipating BFV. After putting in 15+ hours in multiplayer (the only real way to play this game - single player is still a joke) I have found myself disappointed and discouraged.

First, the Goods. Graphics and character animations are excellent, the sound is amazing, and the atmosphere is spot on. Weapon modeling and vehicle physics are great, right on par with the fine line between realism and arcade-ish aspects of this genre. Great Game for the Elite Fan - so far..., Mar 13 2004

This is the closest game I found in the Elite genre of space faring simulations, which is both good and bad. I always enjoyed Elite on the truly Old School gaming computer platforms, and I remember being discouraged at it's difficulty and obtuse interface - but eventually satisfied knowing that I used skill to overcome those obstacles. X2 comes with many of these same problems and reminds me that it will eventually have the same reward.
