Gettin' in Over My Head ~ Brian Wilson
Gettin' in Over My Head ~ Brian Wilson
O.k, first of all, I have to admit to already owning about half this album for 4 or 5 years on bootlegs.(I'm sure I'm not alone here, fellow Wilsonheads). But a lot of this is brand new to me and the material that I already knew is produced much better here. He duets with Paul McCartny on "A Friend Like You" and while it is no small treat to hear two of rock's greatest legends together for the first time,it would have meant more when both were in their prime. His song with Van Dyke Parks, "The Waltz" is another classic in their long history of on again-off again collaborations. Brian has been on a roll for a couple of years now on the concert trail and it is a treat to have some new… Read more
The Five Heartbeats (Widescreen) DVD ~ DVD
5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Movie!!, Jun 11 2004
Wow, what a film! It is a movie about a fictional vocal group from the 60's that is loosely based on The Dells( as opposed to The Temptations, like a lot of people thought). Writer/director/actor Robert Townsend works overtime to make sure we get the whole story of how a vocal group had to make it in the 60's. Michael Wright steals the show as the lead singer who is asked to leave after showing up too late, too many times due to drug and alcohol abuse. Michael Wright has a (should have been) Academy Award winning scene in a parking lot after a show where he sings to prove he still has the chops, only to embarrass himself in front of his ex- group members. The pathos is palpable as the rest… Read more
Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song [Import] DVD ~ Melvin Van Peebles
This is one of the worst motion pictures ever made and I am not exaggerating in the slightest. Forget the technical stuff-bad lighting, worse acting and no screenplay to speak of, this is boring, incoherent and almost unwatchably slow. It gets a lot of credit for being the grandaddy of "Blaxploitation" cinema, but the truth is black movies were about to happen anyway and this one just happened to get there first. If I could give this zero stars, I would, but unfortunately one is as low as you can go. Unmitigated crap!!!
