Product Description

When Turkey unexpectedly sided with Germany in World War I, Winston Churchill, as Sea Lord for the British, conceived a plan: smash through the Dardanelles, reopen the Straits to Russia, and immobilize the Turks.

On the night of March 18, 1915, this plan nearly succeeded -- the Turks were virtually beaten. But poor communication left the Allies in the dark, allowing the Turks to prevail and the Allies to suffer a crushing quarter-million casualties.

A vivid chronicle of adventure, suspense, agony, and heroism, Gallipoli brings fully to life the tragic waste in human life, the physical horror, and the sheer heartbreaking folly of fighting for impossible objectives with inadequate means on unknown, unmapped terrain.

About the Author

Alan Moorehead (1910-1983) was a foreign correspondent for the London Daily Express, where he won an international reputation for his coverage of World War II campaigns, and also served as the chief public relations officer in the Ministry of Defense. He is also the author of many other notable books, including Gallipoli and Darwin and the Beagle.

5.0étoiles sur 5 A Must Read, Fév 12 2003
Par "historyloversi" (New York, NY United States) - Voir tous mes commentaires
Truly this book is a must read for all historians and histroy readers alike. The book captures a good balance between the purely military related technical details and the everyday life in trenches. It also succesfully portrays the interraction between the oposing sides that went far from merely dislike as enemies. A very good book on an immensely interesting topic. AM takes you to a tour on the battlefield and introduces you to main roleplayers. A purely non-fiction book written as if a fiction story. Very interesting indeed.

2.0étoiles sur 5 pro-British and biased againts Turks, Juil 4 1999
Par Un client
This review is from: Gallipoli (Paperback)
Whenever the writer comments about Talaat Pasha, he calles him a "gypsy face", he describes his assasination as "blowing of his head". In Moorehead's head war is not over yet, thoroughout the book he repeats ideas like "only this would happen then the war would be a success ,etc '. He dislikes Young Turk leaders just like he has no respect for Mustapha Kemal. Although he never argues about English generals' correspondence, memoirs, etc., he argues about Kemal's accountably, and describes his comments as childish. In short, this book is not only pro-British, but the author has no respect for Turkish soldiers who died in the defence of their homeland. Writer argues that, if this campaign would have been succesful then one million more soldiers would not have died - of course not including Turkish soldiers -, as if only British life is valuable, and there is no statement about what would have happened to Turkey if it was successful. There is no account about Turkish-British negotiations before the campaign at 15th March 1915, and British intentions about a defeated Turkey and Istanbul.

4.0étoiles sur 5 Moorehead's Gallipoli must be taken into context, Jui 30 1999
Par Un client
This review is from: Gallipoli (Paperback)
I like to refer to this work as the 'western bible to Gallipoli'. The way to read Moorehead's Gallipoli is to take in the factors surrounding the era of its' publication. A fellow from Provo, Utah, says it mentions nothing of the Turkish side. While there is some truth to that, it is also true that not many western books on Gallipoli mention the Turk side at all (save Mustafa Kemal). Most authors on the subject are British or Australian and therefore, tend to be biased (for example, Bean and Mackenzie). In spite of these facts, Moorehead still does a good job of explaining the unfolding chaos: Hamilton's dilemma with Kirchner; Churchill's miscalculations; and to an extent, Kemal's bravery. He is also good at not spending too much time on ANZACs, who were only 1/7th of the operation (excluding Suvla Bay). If you want full coverage, go to Turkey. But Moorehead is the best popular work of Gallipoli you will find in the States. It helped me get an 'A' on a term paper I wrote on the campaign!
