From Publishers Weekly

Based on their West Coast self-help seminars, Dominguez and Robin here map a route to financial security through a relaxed, prudent and environmentally-friendly way of life. Systemically analyzing one's overspending, as in the case histories cited, and calculating the "life-energy" cost (time, expenses, stress) of a competitive career, the authors maintain, can lead to reduced occupational expectations and to surprisingly large economies effected by pre-pricing food, clothing, transportation, loan rates, heath care and so on. Resulting surpluses, invested in Treasury bonds, will yield compound income eventually covering the reduced expenses. This "crossover point" brings financial independence, according to the authors, and freedom to choose one's work for greater personal satisfaction and the "commonweal." Some readers may be put off by the finicky detail and intense tone of the course, but few will fail to find here new insight and encouragement.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sane Advice, Dec 16 2003
By A Customer
This book completely changed the way I live. Being born and raised in NYC (and I still live here) I was totally wrapped up in designer clothes, dinners out, $200 hair cuts, etc. I never felt fulfilled or happy. After reading this book I've made so many changes and, not only do I not feel deprived, I feel liberated. I feel like a fog has cleared in my mind. I've never been more relaxed, calm, and happy in my life. This book, if you seriously follow the steps, not only leads to financial freedom (which it does!) it leads to self awareness and happiness. It also made me feel less isolated and closer to the community.

This book's contents can be summarized in one sentence: it outlines a life-changing philosophy and plan for financial independence.

However, this summary does not give credit to the number of features that enhance this riveting book. Some of these features are as follows:

(1) THE AUTHORS LIVE WHAT THEY TEACH. For example, one of the authors, the late Joe Dominguez was a financial analyst on Wall Street before taking an early retirement (at age thirty-one). Did he make a killing on Wall Street that enabled him to do this? No! What he did was to decide to take back his life by gaining control of his money and eventually gain financial independence through a nine-step program.

(2) A MULTI-DISCIPLINE BOOK. As mentioned, part of the magic of this book is that it teaches a life-changing philosophy. But within this philosophy you'll find other areas such as finance, economics, history, simple mathematics, environmental science, psychology, and spirituality. All these are blended together to form an interesting and instructional narrative.

A cornerstone of this book's philosophy is the following equation: MONEY = LIFE ENERGY. That is, you have to work or expend energy to make money. Most people see their life energy as precious.

(3) PRACTICAL ADVICE. Practical advice on how to save money can be found throughout this book. But the truly practical and another magical part of this book is its NINE-STEP PROGRAM. Readers have a chance to peruse the final, workable form of this program that leads to financial independence. (Financial independence as defined by this book is the amount of money that is ENOUGH for you or you and your family.)

A highlight of this program is that you only have to WORK FOR A FINITE PERIOD OF TIME.

A cornerstone of this practical advice, besides the nine-step program, is FRUGALITY. Don't worry! Frugality does not mean budgeting.

(4) DIAGRAMS. This book has many diagrams, charts, and tables. These help the reader gain a concrete understanding of all concepts introduced.

(5) REAL-LIFE STORIES. This book is permeated with real stories of ordinary people who have decided to follow the nine-step program. What I found interesting when reading these stories is their reasons as to exactly why they decided to follow the program.

(6) END-OF-CHAPTER SUMMARIES AND CHECKLISTS. These summaries highlight the major concepts introduced in the chapters. Many chapters also have a handy checklist.

(7) THE EPILOGUE. This is really an end-of-book summary. The steps of the nine-step program are summarized for review, reference, and reminders. The idea here is to read the corresponding chapter for further details. This summary comes in very handy!

(8) REFERENCES (or resources) and NOTES. There are a large number of notes (footnotes allocated to the back of the book) and many useful references.

(9) FINAL WORDS. Many people would not consider this a feature of this book but I think the fact that the authors were able to end the main narrative of the book with these important words indicates that the book was well planned out. These words are as follows: "There is more to life than nine-to-five."

Finally, the book's authors advocate that when you build up savings that you invest in long-term bonds. Critics (mainly investment "experts") who have read this book say that the rate of return on more aggressive but risky investment vehicles (such as stocks) provide a higher rate of return in the long term. What they fail to realize is that the authors are talking about investing your money in vehicles that will give you a STABLE and CONSISTENT monthly income that you can live off.

In summary, this book creates an awareness of how you are spending your money and your precious life energy. It is that awareness that will transform your dealings with money and lead to financial independence.

In conclusion, those who do not value their life energy need not get this book. But for those who do value their life energy, this inspiring and unique book is your essential guide!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Requires some effort, but WELL WORTH IT, Jun 4 2009
By Ruby Jane (Nova Scotia, Canada) - See all my reviews
I was skeptical about this book when I first picked it up a few years ago. Some of the criticisms are fair: that there is a lot of "emotion" throughout, plus an emphasis on simplicity, ecological awareness, community involvement, and an overall re-evalutaion of our consumer habits. Plus, at the start, you have to do a lot of work. I know this may be "too much" for some people.

HOWEVER! If you want to start "Making a LIVING" for yourself, instead of "Making a Dying" (as the authors put it) then there is no better place to start than with this program. And it is a PROGRAM, like you would do in a college-level course, not just "helpful tips" for saving pennies in a jar.

The first few steps require a bit of memory, a bit of digging, a bit of math (basic addition and subtraction), a bit of organization and A LOT OF SOUL SEARCHING.

Once you understand what the program is REALLY about, that is, figuring out "How many of your (precious! finite!) LIFE HOURS do you give away in exchange for (very little) money" then the other steps become mostly a matter of tracking and organization, customizing as suits your needs.

And, I KNOW at first it seems impossible, unrealistic and downright painful, but please believe me when I tell you that it is very, very worth doing these steps, especially the first few, to the best of your ability. You don't have to do it all perfectly, it's just about doing the best you can, so that you can get a TRUE, HONEST and CLEAR understanding of your past and present attitudes about money.

I have been doing "the program" for exactly 1 year as of today. And I am not ashamed to post here on the internet for all to see that in this ONE YEAR I have radically changed my views on my money, my career and my life's purpose; I am debt-free; AND have added more than $17,000 to my savings and I should add that I don't even have a full-time job! And I live very, very well.

Some people have posted here that the current economy has changed the reality of Bonds since the book was written. That may be true, and I don't think anybody has the answers for those big questions that are beyond the control of ordinary people. Nobody knows what is going to happen.

What I CAN control, however, is where I CHOOSE to spend the money I DO have, IF I CHOOSE TO SPEND IT AT ALL. After all, many people don't realize that you are "ALLOWED" to keep as much of your own money as you want for yourself! This was a huge revelation to me: It's not how much you MAKE, it's how much you KEEP that matters! (OK, so you don't need a book to tell you to spend less than you earn, but this book explores that issue in depth, and it is very eye-opening.)

A few other detractors have jumped to the conclusion that the book is too "liberal", too "new age", too "tree-huggy" or too "scrimp-and-save." Look: You don't HAVE to do ALL the things the authors suggest, like volunteer or live like a renunciate. They are just presenting the issues from a values framework that many, many people would LOVE to embrace, but they feel they "can't afford to."

At age 40, I am far from rich (too many years in school!), but let me tell you JUST ONE THING: having a full year's salary safely stored in the bank, changes EVERYTHING about my working life. Going to work is soooo much more pleasant now, knowing I don't HAVE to be there just to pay off some old debt for some piece of junk I no longer use or own or even remember. My work has become a joy and a delight. I feel sorry for people who have that old bumper sticker on their car that says "I owe, I owe, so off to work I go" Ha, ha, ha, very funny, suckers!

If you learn ONE thing from this book, it should be this: "THERE IS MORE TO LIFE THAN 9 to 5"

I hope that by posting this, I will have convinced someone, somewhere that they can take charge of their money and get their LIFE back. Try it, YOU HAVE NOTHING TO LOSE AND EVERYTHING TO GAIN.

PS: The authors would tell you to borrow it from the library, but really you need your own copy so you can flag pages and make notes, and hopefully refer back to when you need some advice! Get it second hand!
