Product Description

William S. Burroughs

I do not know of any other writer who has done as much with language as Mr. Burgess has done here-the fact that this is also a very funny book may pass unnoticed.

Product Description

In this nightmare vision of a not-too-distant future, fifteen-year-old Alex and his three friends rob, rape, torture and murder - for fun. Alex is jailed for his vicious crimes and the State undertakes to reform him - but how and at what cost?

3.0 out of 5 stars Quite Something, Feb 9 2007
By N. Fehr (Winkler, MB) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I found this book disturbing, even despite the Nadsat slang that was supposed to take the edge off of what's going on; perhaps my imagination works a bit too well. The slang, I should mention, was really well done - oftentimes when writers try to come up with youthful slang-of-the-future it comes off all wrong and is, in the end, completely lame. This however was not, and although it is a bit confusing at first you are almost automatically substituting terms by the end of the book.
The central philosophical question is, though, a good one; the priest puts it best when he asks if God wants us to just be good or to choose to be good, which is something I guess I hadn't really thought of. It raises some interesting questions about what to do with seemingly irredeemable criminals, but at the same time the novel asserts (and, I think, rightly so) that a person whose free will has been taken away is not much of a person at all.
Anyway, it's a tough one to recommend, and actually I can't really do it. It's not that I didn't like it, exactly, but, yeah. Can't really recommend. You should read it, maybe, but not because I told you it's a good idea.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, Even if the Final Chapter Falls Flat, Feb 22 2008
By D. O'BRIEN "D-O-B" (Canada) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
That a book written partially in fictional slang can still be so accessible speaks to the author's immense talent. The only blemish on the novel is the final chapter (the one omitted from the original American publication). I hate to say it, as I'm all for reading a book as the author intended, but removing the last chapter imparts a greater impact on the reader. Regardless, this is a great book.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Droogies, Dec 14 2007
By Benjamin Anderson (Fredericton, NB CAN) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book renewed my love of literature. Burgess' writes in a way that always sounds fresh, no matter what. The language is obviously intense. If you liked Kubrick's masterpiece, you'll love this.
