The Novel Hovel says, "It will give you chills!", Sep 27 2009
After Grace was attacked by wolves she has spent years watching them. In particular the yellow-eyed wolf, her wolf. She feels deeply connected to this wolf for a reason she can't explain. Sam is the yellow-eyed wolf. He spends his winters watching Grace, the girl he loves, but for a short time during the year he is human but has never grown the courage to talk to her... until now. Grace and Sam are instantly connected and fall in love the only problem is that winter is upon them and Sam will have to return to being a wolf unless he can fight it and Grace can help.
I really enjoyed this book. It did seem to take me forever to read for some reason... normally a book as good as this I would have finished in a day not over a week. But I still found that I enjoyed this book. The characters are well defined and there relationship believable. I was really impressed with the way Maggie Stiefvater was able to describe how Sam was always fighting the cold but not having it be overpowering in the story. The story bounces between protagonist views from Grace to Sam pretty frequently but I really enjoy stories where you can get each characters view. This really helps you understand the whole story. Overall, I highly reccommend you read this.

Fantastic! Twilight fans will love it., Jul 3 2009
Swoon.
I loved every page of Shiver. It quietly drew me in, without me even realizing it. The new presentation of werewolf mythology appealed to me. I liked that they were real wolves instead of some kind of slavering, moon-crazed creatures. I don't want to give too much of the story away, so let me just say the concept of this book was fantastic.
Even the greatest concept is nothing without good characters, and Grace and Sam deliver. Grace has a girl next door, introverted charm that makes me wish I was friends with her. My only complaint was that she spent a little too much time whining about her parents ignoring her. Sam was my favorite, though. He's handsome (but not too handsome), he's mysterious, he's humble, he plays guitar and composes lyrics in his mind... sigh. They both felt so real to me, in their thoughts and in their dialogue, that I found myself wanting to talk to them as I was reading.
The point of view switches back and forth between Grace and Sam. This is a device I'm not always a fan of, but I think it really works here. The book wouldn't have been as good, or as gripping, without hearing the inner thoughts of both characters. Grace's longing to keep Sam, and her determination to find a cure couples nicely with Sam's determination to do the right thing, despite how much he wants to stay with Grace. The combination gives the story as a whole a sort of haunting melancholy that I absolutely loved.
I was struck by how eloquently this book was written. Stiefvater wields her words with style. There were so many phrases that I read over and over, just because I loved the images and the way they sounded. I was hoping to give you another quote, but in the end, my favorite is the one from the back cover of the ARC version of the book, "And then I opened my eyes and it was just Grace and me - nothing anywhere but Grace and me - she pressing her lips together as though she were keeping my kiss inside her, and me, holding this moment that was as fragile as a bird in my hands." (p.88 ARC)
Other than a couple of scenes that seemed a little over-dramatic (candy shop!), I adored Shiver. So, in summary, I highly recommend this book!

Jacob Black, there's a new werewolf in town!, Oct 3 2009
I absolutely adored this book! I didn't know much about it when I bought it so when I sat down to read it and saw that it was about werewolves my initial reaction was "Oh, another Twilightish book." Don't get me wrong, I love Twilight but so many books out there are a cut-copy-paste of Twilight. I couldn't have been more wrong. Read this book and find out for yourself why it's so incredible! I got really sucked into this book. I couldn't put it down until a certain point, close to the end, when I realized that something was going to happen to Sam. I felt compelled to keep reading but I knew I'd burst into tears if something happened to Sam. The book will make you care so much for the characters. It is incredibly well written as well. Maggie Stiefvater's writing is almost poetical. It adds a wonderful romantic tone to the whole novel. I thoroughly enjoyed the main idea of how the wolves change. It's imaginative and is different from the traditional werewolf novels. I also enjoyed that in their wolf forms, the werewolves are more animal than wolf. They can't communicate and don't have the same emotions.
I don't have time to write much more. Just read this book and find out for yourself why I am now "Team Sam."
