Product Description

From Amazon.co.uk

In Chasm City, Alastair Reynolds revisits the noir universe of his debut SF blockbuster Revelation Space with a suspenseful, convoluted pursuit story. Its dizzying reversals and games of disguise are reminiscent of Iain M Banks at his trickiest.

The main narrative stars trained killer Tanner Mirabel, a man hell-bent on revenge, who stalks his enemy Reivich from the world Sky's Edge across a 15-year interstellar gap to the gaudy, poisoned melting pot of Chasm City. Flashbacks reveal the violent events and worse repercussions that so badly twisted Mirabel and others. Virus-induced dreams provide a third story line from inside the head of legendary traitor-messiah Sky Haussmann, who long ago shaped the original colonisation of Sky's Edge and whose real story never got into the history books.

Chasm City's complications include spectacular space-elevator sabotage, faulty antimatter drives, hidden aliens, mystery drugs, exotic bio-modification, tailored disease, high-tech weaponry, a new and deadlier form of bungee-jumping, and that traditional SF symptom of decadence: organised hunts with human prey. Violent death is never far off, but our protagonist has deeper worries in that his own motives and memories, even his identity, don't seem to add up quite as they should ...

After many chases, captures and escapes, these tangled plot strands are satisfyingly resolved. Masks are stripped away, and webs of lies exposed. Revelations range from the origin of the dread Melding Plague (which once nightmarishly merged Chasm City's people, machines and buildings) to the reason for an irrational fear of alcoves. An enjoyably tense, tortuous SF thriller. --David Langford --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

From Publishers Weekly

In this worthy follow-up to his well-received first novel, Revelation Space (2001), an especially intelligent far-future foray, British author Reynolds transmutes space opera into a noirish, baroque, picaresque mystery tale. Honor requires that Tanner Mirabel, a weapons specialist/bodyguard, track down and destroy the man who killed his boss. Tanner's pursuit takes him to the planet Yellowstone, where a nano-plague has mutated the glittering human cultural showcase of Chasm City into something bizarre, dark and extremely dangerous. He's aided or threatened or both, at different times by a host of human and not-quite-human characters. Relying on his own combat skills and hard-boiled attitude, Tanner keeps seeking revenge even though he begins to wonder why he's doing it, especially after intrusions of other people's memories lead him to suspect he's not who he thinks he is. Inventiveness and tone are Reynolds's strong points. Presented in a sustained burst of weirdness, the novel's details are consistently startling but convincing in context, and the loose ends eventually tie neatly together. The narrator's tough-guy stance works too, both as an expression of Tanner's personality and as a defensive reaction to the setting's intimidating strangeness. Think of a combination of the movie Blade Runner and one of Jack Vance's ironic SF adventure novels. If the ending feels a bit flat, that's probably inevitable after the exuberant display of wonders earlier.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Favourite of all Reynolds work, Feb 28 2008
By Jeff V (London, Ontario Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Chasm City (Paperback)
This was the first book I read by Alastair Reynolds and, after reading another five of his books, I found it the best. (As another reviewer said, it's like they were written by someone else.) The first person narrative, the character depth, the intricate story lines which converge at the end, the sleek and simple hard SF, the perfect jewel-like descriptions, made this a great read for me.

I was never much of a reader in life. That all changed when a friend suggested that I read Chasam City. This book is so good that wonce I started reading it I just could not put it down. The way Reynolds has such a broad detailed view of this book is incredible. He can take a little thing that seems so harmless and insignificant and turn it into a turning point of the story. Now I have gone on to read other books of his and he is now my favorite Sci Fi guy. Read it you wont be dissapointed

5.0 out of 5 stars SMART, ORIGINAL AND GRIPPING., Oct 15 2006

I read Chasm City last summer without having read any of Alastair Reynolds other works. This story blew me away with its incredible techologies, out of your head concepts and intricatly twisting, ever developing storylines. When all three storylines finally came together the ending was like nothing i've ever read before and alltogether very satisfying. This book is for hard sci-fi fans who love that feeling of being in awe at the ideas exibited in their books. If you enjoy concepts and technologies that set your head to spinning and warrant a few minutes to fully grasp then this book is for you.

I've just recieved Revelation Space and Redempion Ark from amazon.ca and im looking forward to further discovery of this author's universe.
