Product Description

From Amazon.com

Did you ever wake up to one of those days where everything is a problem? You have 10 things to do, but only 30 minutes till the bus leaves. Is there enough time? You have 3 shirts and 2 pairs of pants -- can you make 1 good outfit? Don't worry -- it's just the Math Curse striking! An amusing book about dealing with numbers in everyday life.

From Publishers Weekly

Whew! This latest whimsical work from Scieszka and Smith (The True Story of the Three Little Pigs; The Stinky Cheese Man) is bound to stretch out the old thinking cap. The day after her teacher announces, "You know, you can think of almost everything as a math problem," the narrator is afflicted with a "math curse" that affects how she views every facet of her day ("Everything seems to be a problem"). A minimum of the questions she asks herself are entirely logical ("How many quarts are in a gallon?"); some are far-fetched extrapolations (if an M&M is about one centimeter long and the Mississippi River is about 4000 kilometers long, how many M&Ms would it take to measure the length of this river?); and a happily hefty number are sheer nonsense: "I undo 8 buttons plus 2 shoelaces. I subtract 2 shoes. I multiply times 2 socks and divide by 3 pillows to get 5 sheep, remainder 1, which is all I need to count before I fall asleep." Like the text, Smith's wonderfully wacky collage-like art will give readers ample food for thought-even if it's part junk food. Here's a morsel: "Does tunafish + tunafish = fournafish?" Kids will want seconds-count on it. Ages 7-up.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book for a teacher!, Jan 11 2004

I have used this book to teach second, fourth, and sixth grade. All of my students have enjoyed it. I would even recommend it for higher grades b/c there are a lot of math jokes that students will not get in the lower grades.

This book is great if you want to place a "math curse" on your students so they look at everything as a math problem! They analyze their daily life and are able to write their daily routines as math problems. This is a must have for any teacher/parent!

5.0 out of 5 stars Not all Curses Are Bad!, April 20 2004
By Theresa Romero (Tucson, AZ Pima and U of A student) - See all my reviews
I absolutley loved this book. The illustrations along with the story line brings about a wonderfull method to get children (of all ages)thinking about math. Whether they like it or not, math is a part of their daily lives. This book makes math fun and gets kids thinking about how perhaps they will experience a "math curse" one day.

4.0 out of 5 stars How to reverse a Math Curse, Mar 31 2004
By Allison Wagner (Tucson Az, Pima Student) - See all my reviews
Math Curse -

I would definitely recommend the Math Curse for all ages. It is especially helpful with explaining to young children that math is essential for every day activities. It also deals with math problems that come up unexpectedly in daily routines. The pictures in this book are incredibly vivid and they captivate the reader by displaying math problems through charts and other simple mathematical formulas. This book is a must for every elementary school classroom. This book is really helpful for anyone trying to reach students and change their outlook on math! Students who have once feared math and felt they were cursed will now have a greater appreciation for math!
