5.0 out of 5 stars An important historical compilation, Mar 30 2007
By Progressive Carpenter (Brandon, Manitoba) - See all my reviews
This may well be one of the deepest books ever written about this period in history, and it is an essential read for those interested in the subject- but it would be best if the reader already had some background in the military events of the war and world politics of the time. Then this book will really help you pull it all together, allowing you to understand the true how and why of it all. Shirer spent all that time grinding through diaries and documents so we wouldn't have to. The citing of his sources is next to none.
That said, and even though I gave the book five stars, there are a couple of glaring flaws that I would have thought a researcher of this calibre would have been able to excude from his work. On the last page of the foreword, he states that he will try to be "severely objective", while admitting that he hates dictatorships, and this may show through. It certainly does. In particular, I found annoying his inability to bring Goering and Rosenberg into the story without describing them as corpulent and muddled, respectively. Von Ribbentrop is also constantly ridiculed, although at least the adjectives vary a little. And there are omissions in his research. His description of the Volkswagen project, which he describes as a "swindle" because savers paid for their cars in advance and none received any, overlooks the obvious and legitimate reason for this: the war intervened, and production shifted to military equipment. To those unfamiliar with Volkswagen history, he makes it sound as if gleaning these funds without ever producing a car was the intent. Perhaps if Halder had mentioned the Beetle in his diaries, the subject would have been handled more completely. Granted, you can't make mass murderers look worse by calling them fat or suggesting they were ripping people off on a car deal, but these are but two of several problems that erode the otherwise high quality of the book.
Every written history will have its flaws. This book is still a must read.

How can evil so easily control good people? This book explains in horrifying detail how, when good people do nothing, evil triumphs. A must read for anyone who wants to understand the strange nature of our human world.
