5.0 out of 5 stars Not a 'best of' type book, but an excellent guide, April 14 2007
I was on holiday when I came across this compact book. First of all, I thought it was just another 'best of' list book, but I started to read the introduction and got hooked. Basically, the idea is that if you read all the books the authors recommend, you'll get a really good overview of science fiction. It covers all the themes I could think of, anyway. The introduction is particularly strong, as it gives a clear history of sci-fi and defines it as well.

I have hundreds of science fiction paperbacks and have wrestled with some of their weighter reference books, but I think this book really wins the prize as a neat reference. There's an amazing amount of info within it.

I've read many of the books it suggests and while some are obvious ones, many are quite unusual, so it will stimulate even well-read sci-fi fans. The writing is very lively too - a friend of mine who doesn't normally read science fiction picked it uo and was soon hooked. She says she's going to read the Maureen F McHugh book the wuthors cover, so we'll see !

5.0 out of 5 stars A very good companion, Feb 1 2009

(REAL NAME)
This is an excellent companion equally for those who like science fiction (like myself) or those who would like to embark in some new literature waters. It shows that science fiction is a major genre that has a lot to tell its readers. Packed with information on many writers and their work this is an amazingly compact companion. Myself an avid reader have found lots of information including some ideas and hints that made me rethink and go back to the book I've already read. A very good and informative introduction as well. Highly recommended! (Hey look at the price as well!)
