About the Author

Stephanie Rose Bird is a hereditary intuitive, contemporary rootworker, solitary green witch and visionary. She has been involved with mysticism, symbology, spiritualism and the occult for thirty years. Bird is inspired by her ancestors, in particular her grandmothers, one of which was a psychic and the other a spiritualist minister and herbal healer. Her uncle, a Santeria priest, Babalawo of Shango, taught her the Ifa traditions of the Yoruba people. Bird studies healing, magical and divination traditions of indigenous people around the world with a focus on Africa. Her passions include keeping the ancient traditions alive and updating them so that they evolve with us, suiting our current environment and lifestyles. She is a member of the American Folklore Soceity, the Herb Research Foundation and the Handcrafted Soap Maker's Guild.Bird holds a BFA cum laude from Temple University and an MFA from UC San Diego, and has received multiple academic awards. Bird was an assistant professor at the School of the Art Institute of the Art Institute of Chicago from 1986-2002. Bird is active advising masters' and doctoral candidates, giving lectures, conducting goddess rituals, and writing for numerous publications.

3.0 out of 5 stars Need a different Publisher, May 27 2004
By A Customer
The book started out wonderful. Bird is a fantastic writer with a lot to offer. The problem I had with it was after the first few chapters it took a nose dive into the typical Llewellyn cutsie style. It is easy to tell the author was bound to a certian "formula" for the publisher.
If she publishes another book at a different publishing house I would get it. If you love Llewellyn's stuff this is the book for you. If you want history, folklore and a real sense of the work only the first few chapters are for you. I do commend her on sourcing the organizations trying to save the Gullah/Geechie way of life. I just wish she had been free to continue her style through the whole book. To tell the truth it would be impossible to take a formula from the end of this book and tell it apart from any other author in the stable.
I wish Bird the best of luck in this effort and hope she finds another publisher very soon so she is free to teach what she obviously knows.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well written, reader-friendly, Jun 26 2004
By Maril Crabtree (Mission, KS USA) - See all my reviews
Three things stand out about Stephanie Rose Bird's work: its authenticity, its elegant simplicity, and its casual, yet spiritual, approach to the topic. From the engaging cover to the reader-friendly format of the chapters, this book offers lots of information in accessible language. More than a basic "how-to," this book provides real spiritual guidance for this path of eclectic wisdom.
