Product Description

What is this book about?

The C# edition of ASP.NET Website Programming Problem-Design-Solution has been phenomenally successful, gaining rave reviews for its unique approach and valuable content. The blend of theory and practice.

Now, due to demand from readers, a Visual Basic .NET edition of the book has been produced. This edition will offer the same blend of theory and practice that won so many fans for the C# edition. The book has been completely re-edited to ensure that it address the needs of ASP.net developers who use VB.net.

ASP.NET Website Programming shows you how to build an interactive website from design to deployment.

Packed with solutions to website programming problems, this book will have you building well-engineered, extendable ASP.net websites quickly and easily.

What does this book cover?

In this book, you will learn how to

  • Establish a solid, scalable website foundation
  • Provide flexible user accounts integrating with ASP.net's built-in security
  • Create message forums that enable formatted messages but defend against cross-site scripting
  • Generate revenue from advertising
  • Build a web interface for uploading, downloading, editing, and managing the files on your site
  • Add opinion polls, email newsletters, and news management
  • Deploy the finished site on a live server
  • Build websites using good, n-tier coding techniques

The site that you build is modular. You can slot the modules into your own Web site, modify them, or use them as examples of particular ASP.NET techniques.

The code will work with Visual Basic .NET Standard. However, Chapter 11 "Deploying the Site" uses some features found only in the full Visual Studio .NET. You will still be able to deploy the site, but the process will be less automated.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must Have resource, May 25 2004
By Raiford Brookshire (Chino Hills, ca USA) - See all my reviews
I have not written a review ever on Amazon, but I am writing this. I will make it simple and fast I have been programming for over 10 years and this book was the most impressive 'practical' resource I am ever read. The examples were wide range, but you could feel the entire design process.

Grat stuff, I would like to see more in this series

2.0 out of 5 stars reads more like a mystery than a reference book..., April 14 2004
By A Customer
The code is all over the place in this book. It is fragmented, very hard to follow and does not follow the Patterns and Practices from Microsoft for ASP.NET development.

I realize the book is pretty old, but here are some major issues I found in the book...

- namespace Vs folder structure Vs project name
varies from module to module

- no step by step to make sure you can actually develop the application

- very sketchy on how to use the IPrincipal and IIDentity classes

- no "here's why we did it this way" descriptions

It's just full of gaps and reads more like a mystery than a reference book. I usually find WROX books useful, but this one what a major disapointment. I hope that people consult the Microsoft docs before they use these approaches.

3.0 out of 5 stars Don't understand the five stars!!!, April 8 2004
By Ghislain Tanguay (Charlesbourg, Quebec Canada) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Well, this is a very good application creation. If you download the code and simply use it. You will have just some minor adjustments to make in web.config file and IIS manager. But, if you want to do it yourself, read every chapter and write down the code. Fiouuuuuuuu!!! Good luck. I tried it and with many help from the wrox forum I just finished it.
So many errors in this book. It's why I canno't give this book 4 or 5 stars. The stuff in it is very professional and working with it is very pleasant but when I buy a book it's for reading and trying it, not for downloading code and running this one.

So keep in mind if you buy this pro book, very good programming concept but poor writing.
